"The act of recognizing our mental defilements and transgressions and the way of purifying them is usually accomplished through ritual meditation on the Buddha Vajrasttva. Vajrasttva (Dorje Sempa) is the special deity whose aspect of Buddha-nature is that purification. The practice is to visualize him on top of the head. He is pure white in color, sitting in lotus posture, hold in his left hand by his hip a bell symbolizing wisdom and in his right hand by his heart a vajra symbolizing skillful means. He is smiling gently and is sublimely beautiful. One confesses one’s “sins” before him and such a ritual has great psychological benefit. Then by the power of our faith and the resolve to not to commit the transgressions again, and through the strength of our meditation as well as his vow to save and purify, the light from the mantra spinning in his heart, which is radiating out to the Buddhas of the universe and returning their light to him, drops into us through the top of the head and our internal body becomes luminous. We visualize all our negative emotions, physical sickness, and mental obscurations, all our bad karma and habitual dispositions, as passing out of us in the forms of blood and pus, dark smoke, horrible insects and spiders, all of which satisfy the lords of karmic debt who wait hungrily below."
